Imaging the Thylacine

“For two hundred years visual images of the extinct Thylacine, or Tasmanian ‘tiger’, have played an important role in influencing attitudes and actions toward the species and suggesting how this animal is perceived”. Imaging the Thylacine from Trap to Laboratory was an exhibition held at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and is thoroughly documented online here.
Given many of the original records/images examples relied on drawings and sketches, it’s fascinating to observe the European influence on the shape of the beast and how it evolved over time.
“The longer the Thylacine stays dead, the greater the interest it arouses.” Another interesting article from 2003 by David Owen discusses the power of the symbolism of the Thylacine. Read it here. We’ve got our eyes out for any more sightings and would love to hear your thoughts, stories or close shaves.
